Optimizing Email Communication in Notion: How to Use Clickable Mailto Links with Parameters

When creating links on a Notion page you can use the “Mailto:” parameter to automatically trigger the creation of a new email. This can be exceptionally handy when creating portals for targeted communications. One of the nicer features of the Mailto parameter is the ability to add a subject to the email automatically. There is one caveat to creating the URL and I’ll show you what you need to do below.

When adding a mailto link, you highlight the text that will represent the link and then add the following as the URL:

mailto:email@domain

Just this small amount will trigger the creation of a blank email pre-addressed to the email address you provided. Next you can add more parameters to help target the email and the content specifically. These parameters can be: subject, body, cc, and bcc. So if you wanted to have an email created with a pre-defined recipient, subject, and cc recipient you would normally create it this way in HTML:

mailto:email@domain.com?subject=This is the subject&cc=email2@domain.com

Unfortunately this string won’t work in Notion unless you take something into consideration. Notion won’t read the spaces in the subject area and will truncate the string there. For this to work in Notion you need to format it like this:

mailto:email@domain.com?subject=This%20is%20the%20subject&cc=email2@domain.com

The “%20” represents a space in the string and results in the URL generating a properly formatted email.

I hope you find some uses for mailto links in Notion in your pages and portals. They are a great way to leverage clickable links to streamline your email creation.
